Quafari is the name of a system and method of depicting animals, manifested in the form of art, fashion, and industrial design. These animals are portrayed as stylized animal forms compressed into a square frame, resulting in a design. The name Quafari is a play on words, representing a safari in a square (pronounced "kvafari"). The first syllable of the Croatian word for square ("kvadrat") and the English word "square" are phonetically similar (kv and kv). Accordingly, each design name is derived from its Croatian term, prefixed with "Qu" (e.g., Son - Quon). The choice of the name and naming system is a comment on the dominance of English over the Croatian language, its "cultural victory," and the assimilation of Croatia into Western culture, where English and American politics dominate. Originally created as miniature line sketches, the designs later evolved into large-format linocuts. Quafari is a tribute to video games, specifically the way game designers solved the problem of designing menus within video games. Often, these menus are reduced to basic icons to save screen space. These icons represent certain actions, sometimes quite complex ones, and therefore need to be legible and specific in order to differentiate the menu, especially in the heat of the game. Accordingly, the design of Quafari is simple and legible, and by transitioning from small to large, it has gained a monumental quality. Quafari is the artist's comment on the domination of humans over the animal world. The square (a human creation) symbolizes captivity, habitat destruction, and the extinction of species due to human actions. And just like the animals in a world dominated by humans, Quafari has become something that is exploited. Linocuts have moved from art into design, being endlessly reproduced and applied in various design spheres, whether fashion or industrial
