About the artwork

“Secret aprenticeship”
A photograph from the solo exhibition “Noise” (Zagreb 2018). The title of the exhibition refers to a twofold meaning of the word “noise” – in terms of language (communication noise) as well as photography (visual noise), where noise represents a random variation of irregular light or colour elements.
Every day we find ourselves trying to explain our experiences or thoughts to other people. Most times we realize that, no matter how hard we try, we don’t quite manage to transfer our feelings and thoughts to others. There are different reasons for that: the other person sometimes relates our words to a different experience, puts them in a different context, or simply some external circumstances interfere with our communication. Whatever the reason, communication leads only to partial understanding between people. In that sense, the photograph utilizes visual noise “to talk about” covertness found in all kinds of communication.
The person in the photograph conveys a message, an emotion. And the viewer, due to the interference which impaires complete transparency, receives the message only partly, differently, covertly or even inaccurately. The title of the photograph should be interpreted in the same manner. This interference or noise appears in a form of a membrane placed between the camera and the model. In this way, the shared experience found in communication is interpreted through the medium of photography.
The photography was also exhibited at the Chania Photo Festival (Crete 2020).
The model in the photography is the young Anamarija Marković, the member of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb

Through her work, Vesna Zednik strives to bring forth what easily escapes notice: a shadow cast, an expression held, a form implied

Vesna Zednik was born in 1972. She lives and works in Zagreb, Croatia. In her works, she focuses on details that bring a personal relationship to the photographed objects in photography. With her photographs, she predominantly thematizes the human body, studying primarily the face, hands and movement. Zednik was noticed at the international exhibition of the 37th Zagreb Salon in 2016. Since then, her photographs have been published on book covers, record and CD covers, in magazines. She exhibits at Croatian and international exhibitions. Her photographs have been included in the Croatian monographs "Duration in Time", Zagreb 2018 and Portrait of Croatia 2020. Zednik has received praise and awards for her works, among which the most important are the Grand Prix Fernando Soprano (Rijeka, 2018) and the Award for the best photographic portrait taken by an author from Croatia (Zagreb 2019).
